The Centre of Western Armenian Studies and Ghent University are delighted to present this year's Taniel Varouzhan Annual Lecture, which will be held at Ghent University.

Prof. Andrei Zorin will explore the enduring cultural myth of the "true tsar" in Russian history - a figure believed to lead the nation from disaster to triumph. The talk will conclude with a reflection on Vladimir Putin as a contemporary embodiment of this powerful myth.

Abkhaz, Armenians, Azerbaijani and Georgians have long co-existed in a region framed as the South Caucasus. These different ethnic categories result from socio-political constructions that are rarely questioned. Playing a pivotal role in the wars that have unfolded in the region, ethnic categorization is particularly central in shaping current antagonizations

During the lecture, the speaker Dr. Kseniya Oksamytna (City University of London) will present her article “Imperialism, supremacy, and the Russian invasion of Ukraine” published in Contemporary Security Policy in 2023.

From limited interactions in the early 1990s, the EU and Central Asia now consider each other to be increasingly important. During this roundtable, the speakers will discuss the many aspects of these interactions.

This talk will look into the position and role of the Caspian and Aral seas and their respective littorals in the regions’ social transformation in the modern era. What role and function did these ‘inland seas’ had in imperial annexation and integration, for example?

On June 28, the Russia and Eastern Europe Knowledge Alliance (REKA) organised an online event titled A new reality in Eastern Europe. We discussed this new reality with representatives of knowledge institutions, the government and media in the Netherlands. Because what are the consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine for both countries, Europe as a whole and the Netherlands in particular? Both the opening session and the panel discussion were livestreamed from 14:00 until 15:30.

Ms. Dzhaparova will address Ukraine's bid for EU candidacy status, Dutch-Ukraine relations, and the current situation in Ukraine, including the Crimean Peninsula.
